Toolmaking and Long Stitch Binding Workshop (4/12 - 4/13)

Our weekend workshop series continues in April, with Toolmaking for Book Arts, and Long & Link Stitch Binding.

Instructor Jim Croft, founder of Oldways Book Arts Tools, has been teaching toolmaking, bookbinding and papermaking throughout the United States for many years. We’re thrilled to host his first-ever Bellingham workshop.

On Saturday, participants will learn to create useful book arts tools out of wild-harvested elk and deer bone, as well as bamboo and various hardwoods (the vegan option). After a short discussion about how different shapes enhance certain tasks, participants will choose their projects. In the afternoon, each person will create their own awl, and take in a demonstration on whittling, filing, and carving on bone and wood. Feel free to make beads, buttons, or jewelry.

On Sunday, participants will create a hand-sewn book using wooden covers made of straight-grain Western Cedar, and a hemp textile spine. There are countless examples of this style of book still holding together after hundreds of years of heavy use. This style of book opens very well and lends itself to many sewing options.

The cost of the workshop is $110 per person, plus a $40 materials fee. Enrollment fees can be paid by credit card or check at Bison, or by credit card over the phone. This workshop is limited to 10 people, so please make your booking as early as possible to ensure your spot.
