Paper Mill Workshop - May 21 - May 24

Paper Mill Workshop
Western Style Hand Papermaking
May 21 thru May 24, 2008

Using professional paper making equipment participants will work in a setting similar to a historic production hand paper mill to make quality text and art papers in quantity. With an emphasis on making paper that can be used for printing, drawing and painting, participants will work with cotton and hemp fiber, explore watermarking, and all the steps in making useful paper in both laid and wove finish and leave with a goodly amount of personalized paper. There will also be a discussion about the necessaries of setting up a personal paper making operation.

Workshop instructor Rob Buchert, along with his wife Georgia, is proprietor of Tryst Press, a letterpress and paper making studio established in 1993 in Provo, Utah. Tryst Press books and papers are found in many public and private collections throughout North America and Europe. Rob is also the 2008 winner of the Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design. Among other projects, Rob is currently working on the book ‘Mould and Deckle, Vat and Press’, a manual for setting up a private paper mill.

Participants are encouraged to bring a simple line drawing they will convert into bent wire for use as their personal watermark.
