Printing for School and Shop

“Printing for School and Shop - A Textbook for Printers’ Apprentices, Continuation Classes, and for General Use in School,” is a book that is available in hard copy, in an online text document, and as a download from Google Books. It is an excellent resource for anyone who is considering to learn, or beginning letterpress.

Published in 1917, chapters in the 319 page book include a thorough description of all aspects of parts, composition, setting type, proofing, and type calculations, through presswork, locking up forms, ink and paper. It provides an excellent overview of the basics of traditional letterpress printing with many illustrations such as the correct way to hold a type stick, locking up forms and oiling and maintaining a press.
