Variable Speed Motor

I’m just getting to know my press (1913 C&P New Style) and am having a little trouble with regulating the speed of the motor. The speed regulator (a dial that you turn like a mini steering wheel with a knob on it) definitely works but it seems to want to keep speeding up or keep slowing down and I haven’t managed to get it to maintain a consistent speed. Can anyone tell me if there are any tricks to this?

Check your motor, if it uses brushes they may be worn out. I can tell when my brushes are wearing out or not seated right because the press will start to speed up by itself or slow down almost to a stop.I have 1935 new style c&p. The contacts in the speed control may also be dirty.
