Creating my own thick rules - which wood?

I’d like to create some of my own thick rules/panels to use as blocks of colour behind text, borders etc.

I don’t have a lot of woodworking experience so would appreciate any advice on how best to go about this.

What wood(s) would be most suitable?

Or would it be best to cut simply lino or vinyl shapes and mount onto wood, getting them type high?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Simon

Easiest way is to construct them in a computer program and print them via the photopolymer plate process. Hands down the best panels, solids, what have you.
