Interchangeable Chase?

Would a chase from a 5 x 8 Craftsmen Imperial…lock-up on a 5 x 8 Craftsmen Superior?

boundstaffpress linked to his scan of a Craftsmen catalog in this thread: http://www.briarpress.org/16779
(Thanks for that, by the way) In that catalog, it says that the Imperial chase is 5x8 and the Superior is 6-1/2x10, so they wouldn’t seem to be interchangeable.

I am curious to know if the chases from any other presses are interchangeable with the Imperial or the Superior.

Interesting question. Of course the Imperial and Superior were copied from different sized presses to begin with, so they obviously are not interchangeable.

However, here’s something I just learned about Craftsmen copies of other presses….

I just discovered that the 4x6 chase from my original Victor Mfg Co. press would NOT fit into the Craftsmen copy of that press - the one they call their Victory 4x6. The chase-bed of the copy is about 1/16” more narrow that the one on the press they copied.

They appear to have not allowed for shrinkage when they made their casting mold from the original…

But the good news is that the chase could be ground down to fit, and that the smaller Craftsmen chase fits nicely into the larger Victor bed…
