Typefounding

I recently uploaded to youtube a set of videos I made with Stan Nelson about typefounding. These shorts cover the whole of the pre-industrial-revolution process, from punchcutting to finished type.

This is a fairly exacting demonstration of the process used from the 15th century up until the advent of pivotal casters. Stan was gracious enough to let me have the run of his shop for a couple days to film it. We also put one together showing the assembly of a mould, given that very few are ever disassembled.

Thanks so much, Doug. Those are wonderful! I’ve always wanted to see demonstrations like that. Finally I know what that TV antenna thing is on a type mold!
