Chandler and Price, Printing Press

Up for sale is a complete print shop and a working, early style, curved spoke, 8 x 12, Chandler and Price letter press machine. I am including everything I have removed from the print shop it came from along with it. I held typesetting and printing demonstrations for three decades using this press. The press and it’s accessories were a working part of my Museum of Antiquated Technology for many years here in Hanson, Ma.

There are a large number of accessories included. The press comes with an oak typeset cabinet with a nice, marble type assembly surface and type drawer holders built in. The cabinet has a large number of drawers, most are full of type. I have a bucket full of unsorted type. There are three typeset trays; a lead spacer bar length cutter, two sheet counters one being extremely old. There are three chases and several chase clamps a brass ink bottle and an assortment of other gizmos all of which are used to set up print jobs on this machine. Although I have 5 of the ink roller shafts, the rubber rollers themselves are in poor condition or missing. These are available from several suppliers. There is a side-by-side feed and stack paper table that is removable for cleaning and lubricating the machine.

I have all the controls and the motor for this machine. I have a nice, variable speed, flat belt motor from the 1920’s, the starting switch and the floor mount pedestal. The floor mount pedestal post turns on the power to the motor and operates the motor speed linkage from the operator’s standing position. I have the flywheel brake pedal bar and mount and I have the drive belt as well. As I said, this was a working press in my museum.

One of the bottom roller shaft plungers is slightly stiff. I am working on it. There is some light rust on some of the bare steel parts. I do not have the foot pedal crank assembly but I can make you a nice one if you wish. There is a very old break in the left hand roller arm. It was professionally repaired many years ago and is barely noticeable. I have kept this machine well oiled and functional for many years and I am describing this machine to be in excellent operating and aesthetic condition for your enjoyment. I just completed a take-apart and put together cleaning the press and bearing oiler holes after her long sleep. She is now ready for her new owner.
