Using wood type without a press?

I was wondering if it was possible to use wood type letters without a press? For example, coating a single letter with ink and applying it to paper by hand, almost like a stamp? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You will do better to ink the letter form and put the paper on top. You can then easily apply pressure to the back of the paper with a wooden spoon or similar handy implement. For very little you can acquire a student grade bamboo baren made for printing relief artwork. It may be more comfortable to use than the spoon.

Rubber-stamping it will not work but, as mentioned in the previous comment, placing the paper on top and rubbing the paper from the back will. You will find that some papers work better than others when using this method. For instance, copy paper will give you terrible results while Japanese paper should work very nicely. Good luck and have fun. Kent at The Nomadic Press
