Restoring Wood Type

I have come across some wood type at a garage sale. It was a good deal (maybe), but the type is dirty and caked with ink. Any suggestions on how to restore wood type? I’ve tried mineral spirits and a toothbrush without much luck. I’ve seen suggestions of using alcohol but am concerned it will dry the wood out. Please let me know your thoughts.

I’ve posted an image… It’s not a very good picture, but you can tell the patina is very dull looking. It doesn’t have a smooth, even surface.

Any help is much appreciated.
