TIPOGRAFIA & XILOGRAFIA
Typography and Wood Engraving

26-29 August 2010

Participants will learn how to create and print, by-hand, a book, in a run limited to 20 copies. They will compose the text by hand, using moveable type, and then engrave a wood block. They will then print the text and images, and, finally, they will bind the printed sheets into a small book.

This workshop is given by Alessandro Zanella and Lucio Passerini at Zanella’s private printing studio, Ampersand, in the hamlet of Santa Lucia ai Monti. Its spectacular location, near the town of Valeggio sul Mincio, is set in rolling vine country just south of Lake Garda, 20 kilometres south west of Verona. There are comfortable, modestly-priced accommodations in Santa Lucia ai Monti – a mere 150 metres from the workshop.

The book will comprise 12 pages, printed on two Stanhope presses, one from 1854, the other built in 1862. These are the presses Zanella uses to produce all of his books. At the end of the course, each participant will receive a personal copy of the book, illustrated with the engravings of all the participants.

No prior knowledge is needed to follow and enjoy this course.
Workshop runs four days, for a total of at least 30 hours work.
The course is strictly limited to seven participants.

Cost is 550,00 Euros which covers all materials and the use of tools and equipment.

Deadline to register: 15 August, 2010.
