Internship Description:
Interns will receive one-on-one training in order to gain an extensive knowledge of letterpress design and printing by way of the point and pica system, and will have a chance to observe client/designer interaction firsthand. Set-up and printing experience will be gained initially by observing or shadowing a designer, then by the assignment of individual reprint jobs. Interns will be required to complete these jobs entirely on their own as a way of proving themselves competent to complete personal projects as well as paying jobs that come in. They will also be required to aid in sorting type and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment. What sets a Yee-Haw internship aside is that we do keep a public space and a retail shop; therefore, basic retail and shop duties are a part of what we do here. Aside from design work, interns will be expected to help with retail duties and shop upkeep. Occasionally, we will allow the public to come back into the shop and observe the process or take a tour. This gives way to interesting discussion with the public, as well as visiting artists and designers. Yee-Haw hosts at least 2 or more visiting artists per year. Interns will interact closely with these artists in order to give them an understanding of where things are, as well as to help them complete editions in a timely fashion during their stay. Interns will also be required to print their own business cards at the end of the internship, and should see and aid in the completion of anywhere from 10-100 different jobs, both digital jobs sent out for offset printing, as well as traditional letterpress jobs printed in-house.
