I think the Type Museum had access to the mats. I was in close contact with Justin Howes for some time before his unfortunate death (he was a co-moderator over at PPL) and he had access to pretty much everything Caslon. He helped kick start the new and improved Museum so I suspect they would be able to supply, if possible, probable, maybe, only shot at it, etc. If they are still around.

Although the Type Museum remains closed to the public - everything is still there. As far as I am aware the last operational casters for the Stephenson Blake mats were Howard Bratters at Woodside Press in Brooklyn, that he had shipped over and recommissioned. He was probably also the last person to handle the SB mats at the museum in returning them to their positions in the SB safes after he brought the safes to the museum from Sheffield in 2005. There are a set of SB casters in the foundry at the Museum but their recommissioning was halted by the museum’s closure. Sue Shaw is the remaining active trustee but you might make preliminary enquiries via Duncan Avery who is still managing the fulfilment of continuing orders for Monotype mats and spares from stock at the Museum.
Although the fact that the NMSI Science Museum had commissioned plans for the removal to storage of the collections there has been no statement about when or if this will take place. Sue Shaw, Duncan & Kumar are still regularly on site.

The Type Museum Society is an independent group of supporters of the Museum who still remain committed to and hopeful that the Type Museum collections gathered together at private & public expense may again reopen to the public, students and researchers.
