C&P part ID

I have a C&P 8x12 New Style press which I am tidying up for re-sale. There is a part on it I haven’t seen before on a similar Old Style press (see photo). Can anyone help identify what it is and how it is supposed to look when complete - I am assuming it might be something to do with a safety rail or bar that moves ones hand up out of the way of a closing platen. If someone can post a photo of the complete assembly installed on a press I would be very greatful, or better still, if there is anyone out there who has one of these “things” that they could sell to me? Many thanks.

I wouldn’t mind betting that this press once had a canvas style safety guard that rises up as the press closes. Any closer?
