Bookmaking Workshops 11/5 + 11/19 + 12/4

Bookmaking for Writers, Small Press Publishers, and Dabblers
with Betsy Wheeler

Three separate 1 day intensive workshops:
Saturday, November 5th, 1-5pm
Saturday, November 19th, 1-5pm
Sunday, December 4th, 1-5pm

$60 for one workshop (includes materials and private consultation)

In this intensive one-day workshop, you will be introduced to three simple methods of book design and hand binding, and will explore the keen relationship between the written word and physical object that contains it. We’ll start with a discussion on the editorial process by looking at samples of handmade books whose physical design engage in direct conversation with the language contained within them. As a group we will study the limitless possibilities of the creative process of bookmaking and its relationship to the writing process; these discoveries will hopefully be generative to both your own writing and the complementary outlet of bookmaking. The workshop will culminate in you creating a handmade book of your choice: blank, full of your own writing, or the writing of someone whose work you admire.

Flying Object demonstrates the beauty of the relationship between creator and created, and we will use it to inspire us both collaboratively and individually.

Enrollment in this course offers you 4-hours of hands-on experience with simple book design and binding, materials provided, and a 1-hour individual follow-up session with the instructor to assist you in completing your book project. Please note that you DO NOT need to have a book project in mind to attend this workshop!

If you are interested in reserving a place, please send an email introducing yourself and your interest in bookmaking and/or publishing to [email protected] Class size will be held at 5.
