Buying A Slightly Damaged Press Paying To Much

I’ve had my eye on a C & P 8x12 and the type bed has a small chip taken out of the bottom of the type base. I’ve been assured it won’t be a problem and I can’t see that it would be a huge problem especially if I was using a Excelsor Chase Base or a Box Car base. Would I need to be concerned about certain strain in that area that could damage it even more? Also does $2,600 sound like a lot to pay for a 8x12 C & P. If I purchase one this price includes a treadle, new rollers trucks and a chase. And does not include delivery.

Yes, it does sound like a lot for an 8x12, especially for a damaged press. By ‘type base’, I assume you mean the bed.

A fair price for a non-damaged 8x12 with rollers and treadle would be $900 - $1200, depending on condition and location.

Yes, the bed. I’m a newbie to letterpress so I’m still learning all the technical terms. Even as a newbie I’ve felt like that was to much but I’ve also been obsessively (and I mean obsessively, I’m getting no work done :-p) searching the internet to find any type of letterpress in Georgia and I’ve only found 2 people who have them. I’ve also looked on this site for any availability in surrounding states but it’s pretty limited. I’d be willing to pay shipping if I found a press for the right price. Doesn’t have to be a C & P.

Do you think I would have issues with that damage if using with a box car base or Excelsior Chase + Base.

how did the chip get there?? and what else might be broken, i think i would keep looking for a press, for that kind of money there should be something around without any damage.

Have you seen this site:

more expensive then average prices, but maybe not so far from you?

Maybe a photo of the “chipped area” would be helpful. If it truly is a small chip on the edge of the bed, it should not be a problem. The larger the “chip”, the more likely that there would be a problem.

But again, for that kind of price, I would have expected it to be restored to museum quality…

Widmark, that’s actually the place I’m looking to buy from. The press I was looking at was this one: http://javacycles.com/categories/57/products/215
It’s discounted so 1,899 and then new rollers and trucks would be another $400 something I believe. There is a picture of the chip at the bottom.
