Learn to bind books and walk away with gifts for your loved ones! In this three evening book making extravaganza, create books your friends and family will covet, as well as learn the skills necessary to make more. Come for one, two, or three evenings!
Night #1 (November 26th, 6 to 9pm) - This evening we will tackle the link stitch, an ancient and beautiful structure. These books will sport decorative paper covers and exposed sewing at the spine. The link stitch is easy to learn and satisfying to produce. In addition to instruction on preparation and sewing, we will also discuss ideal material choices and tools as well as tricks for the production of multiple books. Class fee $50, $40 student/senior.
Night #2 (November 27th, 6 to 9pm) - This evening we will construct a leather travel journal using a traditional long & link binding. This binding was originally developed in Italy several hundred years ago. Books bound in this way are ideal for taking with you everywhere, the protective leather wrapper keeps the book safe. We will discuss materials and tools as well as variations on this binding. Class fee $50, $40 student/senior.
Night #3 (November 30th, 5:30 to 9:30pm) - Spend the evening making simple books with letterpress-printed covers! We will go into production as we print and bind simple books that make ideal holiday gifts. Students will learn the Pamphlet stitch as well as the fundamentals of hand-setting and printing from metal type. Everyone will leave with a stack of blank books with exciting, hand-printed covers. Class fee $75, $60 student/senior.
