REPRODUCING FLONGS??

Reproducing Flongs !!! from another inter related thread. With a working knowledge of Moulding Press, and occasional studies of Adana, (smaller) and Heidleberg Platen** (bigger) application and use of hot foiling attachments, Given the Challenge, and the Availability of Phrenolithic Board could probably produce a small working Flong Press, via the following:- With adaption of my own (admittedly only 15 imperial ton) bearing press and the utilization of 4 (four) flat plate type elements @ 1,500 Watts each, making 6,000 Watts in total, sandwiched between, at top 1” thick steel and at bottom, 1/2 inch thick Copper, (for pressure and heat transfer respectively) under the 15 ton Press, could probably get up to 10” x 8” passably? The moulding press I operated, went to at least, A 2, but operated at MINIMUM of 50 Tons P.S.I. and with top and bottom platens, both heated at least to 12,000 Watts, and did actually drag the juice, from the Super Caster whilst coming up to speed!!! “”“This the very Press that brought the lunchtime pasties/pies up to working temperature, at about >>9-12 ems

Apologies, I bored the system to death so it retaliated and dumped 50% of my post, understood, appreciated, and forgiven.May try the Stop Press Later! Mick

A2 is boadsneet?

Stereo was not my trade, but I think the hydraulic pressure would need to be about 500 tons for A2 if whole surface pressed at one time? Or else the flong would need to be very soft and wet, therefore the heating off the various surfaces.

Alan.

PS: As I posted previously, at the afternoon daily where I worked for a year, someone put a piece of over-typehigh steel beside a chase when using the press for proofing; bent the frame of the machine. I have sometimes wondered if the machine could have been rigged to work again, perhaps only as a proofpress. We used one of those early type presses for proofing large formes, the presses which have an eagle on top of the frame.

Alan.

PS: Also proofed A2 formes by inking the forme, then rolling a sheet of paper across the forme after wrapping the damp sheet around a wide (impression) roller with a handle at both ends of roller.

Proofreading, change “off” to “of”. Change “A2 is Boadsneet?” to “A2 is Broadsheet?”

Alan, Thank you, yes as it was along time ago, The Press was calibrated far higher than I was instructed to use it, probably because it only had to go to Standard Magazine page size, I.E. Playboy, Penthouse etc (SO I WAS TOLD) thats my story and I stand by it, Your Honour!!!>> The firm was the General/Jobbing arm, of The Newspaper Group, so perhaps (I know not) the capacity may have been up to Tabloid Paper size.>> With Murky Hindsight, the red telltale needle, was set at about 30-40% of the redline, which in itself was less than the total, by a good margin. So 50 tons ish was the max required.>>> As I played in the local Garage, for fun, even during apprenticeship, saw the results of Very High Pressure Hydraulic Ram bursting, Maybe 2,000 lbs or more. Actually got paid Pocket Money to help mop it up.>>>BUT, seriously as the word carcinogenic had not been invented, or H. & S. was in its infancy, had no concept of possible harm.??? Perhaps, take on board in more depth, the serious implications as posted here, on B.P.>> with regard to print related chemicals. Please!! MICK

During discussion about industrial deafness, one oldtimer said that “deafness is part of the trade”. I used to stuff small wads of Kleenex tissue in my ears when working linotype. Men working on rotary presses were eventually issued with earmuffs.

to all:

Are we being inconvenienced by a spammer?

Tuck this in here.

At the morning daily where I worked, after we had a Mergenthaler VIP photosetter for a few months, a memo came through advising to turn the cooling fan around, to pressurise instead of depressurising the cabinet. Could this apply to some other kinds of machinery still used today?

PS: I am thinking of how to produce a perpetual calendar, using plates, but those plastic plates were not my territory, but my idea uses them (possibly). Also the idea could have been adapted to use small-area stereo, maybe.

Would that Hoe small stereo machine (used to make matrices from flong), looks like a mangle, be useful to reduce smash printing wear on good type?

I try to be clear with my meaning.

Alan.
