I have recently purchased a Ballara (type gauge, line gauge, pica pole or ruler). It comes from Australia, made of brass, is two sided and 18 inches long, has scales for 6 &12 pt, 5 & 10 pt, 8 pt and inches.
Was Ballara a major manufacturer of composing or printers’ in Australia? If so, what else did they make?

I have exactly the same gauge. Bought in Sydney in 1965. By that time in Australia it would be very hard for any manufacturer of letterpress equipment to be “major”, as Offset printing was hard on its tail. Know nothing else about Ballara, unless it has a connection with Ballarat in Victoria.
