Small Press printing in California

Hello,

I have moved to Los Angeles from London where I have studied book design and illustration. My focus was on limeted edition books and I have worked exclusevly with letterpress and linocuts. In LA I am continuing to master the craft in addition to teaching Typography and Design at the Art Institute of California in Santa Monica.

Since I have fairly recently moved to California I would like to find out more about small press printers in the area, share my work and see the work of others.

In second part of June I plan to travel to Northern California. I would love to meet fellow letterpress printers and book makers. Would anybody have any suggestions or know of any small press places that are open for visits in LA, San Francisco or Northern California?

Thanks!
-Vladimir

P.S: Some of my books and illustrations can be seen online at:

Hello and welcome.
I took a glance at your website, and was absolutely smitten! I have a bit of a passion for limited edition and artists books (though must confess that my own endeavours are rather few and trivial,) but those looks simply enchanting! Anyone who can make Maleviches pixel - fun…. :)

Onto your question:
I know there is The History San Jose Printers’ Guild that meets every month at History Park (in Kelley Park), San Jose. They seem to be pretty open and would gladly welcome some fresh blood.

Vladimir -

I’m moving to Pasadena next month. If you have the time I would like to meet you and show you my work once I get settled. I can forward some jpgs of my letterpress work if you’re interested. I’m a hobby printer but I want to use my press to make a living. My press is a Columbian #2 table top model. Currently I’m a designer and lettering artist at a greeting card company in Ohio.

I visited your work online. Wow! So amazing. I would love to understand your process and see you in action.

Best regards,
Alex

Vladimir,
Check out One Heart Press (SF), Julie Holcomb Letterpress (Emeryville) and Dauphine Press (Petaluma) as well as The Center for the Book Arts (SF).

I graduated from Art Center in Pasadena, I think they still have a thriving Letterpress shop worth visiting. I live in Marin County and enjoy printing on my table top Chandler Price along with making a living doing print and web design.

Your work is inspiring! Good luck.

Vladimir,
My name is Nathan, and i am a pressman at Dauphine Press, (recommended by Carol, above). You are more than welcome to stop by and check out our operation, if it fits into your travel plan.
We are a fairly high production shop, for letterpress, and specialize in custom invitations, primarily weddings. We run Heidelbergs (3 windmills and one cylinder).
Check out a taste of our work at
dauphinepress.com
We’d be happy to have you by .
thanks,
-Nathan

Vladimir,

I belong to History San Jose’s Printers Guild, and if you’ll email me when you go, I can connect you with whichever of us will be in the Shop that weekend. We staff the shop on weekends; for a weekday visit we’d arrange to have a Guild member meet you.
If you get there on the 2nd Saturday of the month, we meet from 10 to noon and welcome other printers to visit. “my” day in the shop is that day, so I stay for lunch and do the shop.
My printing is nowhere in your category, but http://the3toad.googlepages.com will give examples, and some links/shots from History Park. ==Marjorie

PS Volunteer day at the International Printing Museum near you is the 1st Saturday— we’d love to have you there, too. (since I live between the 2 museums I volunteer at both) IPM is a great place, LOTS of toys to play with and a great printing library too.
