We had an unforgettable experience in Scotland a couple of years ago, living and art-making in a remote, working light house on the rugged west coast. This time, Susan Fateh, our International program coordinator, has found excellent studios at the Findhorn Foundation. We’ll be staying in lovely guesthouses a short walk from the spacious studios. Findhorn is an intentional eco-community, one of the first in the world and was a model for the Omega Institute.

We’ll be working Findhorn’s Moray Art Centre that features bright, airy, and spacious studios where each student will have a large work table for spreading out as they work. Lunch will be served in the lounge area of the Art Centre. Vegan, vegetarian, and/or gluten free dinners will be served in a private dining room within the Findhorn campus.

Mid week we’ll take a half-day trip to Cawdor Castle, the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

In the evenings you can take a lovely 20 minute walk into the Village of Findhorn for a stop at one of the fabulous pubs, and relax watching the long slow sunset over the Moray Firth. Since we will be in Scotland at solstice, when the days are long and luxuriously drawn out, the 10 pm sunset’s after glow keeps it light enough to walk home until the wee hours.

Students arrange their own transportation to Inverness where we will pick you up for the half hour ride to Findhorn. Plan to arrive on June 17th to settle in and get ready for class that will begin on the 18th. The final class will be on the 23rd, with departure for Findhorn on the 24th.

The course

Join WSW’s artistic director, Tatana Kellner, for 6 days of intensive and inspiring studio experience. Taking a cue from our location, we’ll spend the week mapping new work in response to our immediate environment. Our inspiration will be both the natural and the social world surrounding us. Through a series of guided exercises we’ll examine the path taken by each one of us as artists navigating in the contemporary world.

We’ll combine printmaking, drawing, photography, text and collage techniques to create complex works. Students will have an option of working with text as image or text and image, creating a series of individual but related works or a one of a kind artist’s book. Basic bookbinding concepts and binding techniques will be covered.

Class fee covers all in country travel and housing. Early registrants will have a broader choice of guest rooms. DIY breakfasts are included.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 15.
