The 9th Annual Los Angeles Printers Fair

The Los Angeles Printers Fair at the International Printing Museum in Carson, CA, is an annual celebration of letterpress, book arts, and the paper arts. With the backdrop of the world’s largest collection of working antique presses, the LA Printers Fair brings together 70 artistic vendors and 1,500 visitors to experience the creative world of book arts and beautiful printing. Throughout the Printing Museum’s galleries visitors can print their own keepsakes on antique letterpresses, have their name cast in printers type, make paper by hand, or even screen print their own shirt. Exhibitors include many of the best letterpress and printmaking artists in the Southwest, offering custom posters, prints, hand-printed cards, memorabilia and hand-made paper for sale.

This year’s featured Artist will be Artist-Printmaker Earl Newman. Earl has designed and printed the posters for the Monterey Jazz Festival for 50 years (a collection recently acquired by the Smithsonian) and many of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Theater Posters. Earl will be at the fair along with an exhibit of his impressive portfolio.

This year’s Printers Fair will feature a special exhibit, Printing on the Silver Screen, featuring printing presses and artifacts that the Printing Museum has rented to Hollywood over the last 75 years. These presses have been featured in many movies including The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), Have Gun Will Travel (1957), even John Boy’s Press on The Waltons (1971). More modern rentals include TV’s Gilmore Girls (2004), NCIS (2010), Seven Pounds (2008), and the critically acclaimed film Inception (2010). Guests will have a chance to print a special “Newsies Banner” keepsake on the actual press rented for the cult hit Newsies (1992).

The LA Printers Fair is an annual event and celebration that will leave visitors both impressed and inspired about the creative worlds of printing and the graphic arts. The Printers Fair is from 10–5 pm, Saturday, October 14th. Admission is $10 per person and $5 for children under 12. The Printing Museum is located at 315 W. Torrance Blvd, Carson, CA. The International Printing Museum is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to the heritage, preservation, and advancement of the printing arts.
