1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition

125 years ago today, May 1, 1893, President Grover Cleveland opened the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition, and with the press of a button, the greatest show on earth began with an electrifying start. Read more: http://www.howardironworks.org/hiw-article-columbian-expo-1893.html .

A small legacy from the World’s Columbian Exposition is now a part of our Collection - a press model of the magnificent R. Hoe & Co. Sextuple perfecting press displayed at the R. Hoe & Co. exhibit in 1893.

Thank you.

This is a great one-of-a-kind piece of printing history that you have. I am glad it is in a printing museum where it can truly be appreciated.

Here is another piece from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. The new American Type Founders company gave away this piece of type to visitors to their exhibit at the fair. Since ATF was formed in 1892, it is probably the first time the company’s name was cast into type. They must have given out thousands, so there are probably many more of these out there somewhere. Sorry about the image quality.
