I can see the pin at the base of the spring and assume I just need to pull that, but the ends are wrapped tightly around the shaft and I don’t want to break anything.

That’s just a easily replaced cotter pin. It likely will not break when you straighten it for removal, but, if it does it’s a hardware store item.
I just straightened it and it broke but you are right. Should be easy to replace. Thank you!
