identifying some type

I just acquired a Kelsey 5x8 that came with some unused type, still in its original wrapper. It is labeled 8point No. 6-8 The New England Type Foundry Meriden, Connecticut, lower case. I have a Kelsey supply book, and I see the type in it, but it does not indicate another font name (like Times New Roman or something). What type face is this? Or most similar to? Does it have another name at all? Thanks!

My Kelsey Printer’s Supply Book (c. 1982) lists No. 6-8 under its “Centenary” font (p.F-5). For its record keeping and ordering information Kelsey numbered its fonts from both its “New England Types” and the Connecticut Type Foundry. The number designation was followed by a hyphen and the point size. Hence the “6” stood for its New England “Centenary” font and the “8” for “eight-points”. Caps only fonts added the designation “CF” after the point size. Types that Kelsey sold for the Connecticut Type Foundry had separate numbers for ordering and record keeping. Kelsey freely admonished customers not to confuse or mix seemingly similar type fonts from the two foundries, since they were cast in different places with different matrices. I recall clearly being warned not to confuse the NE “Centenary” with the Conn. “Century Roman”.

Hope this helps.

It sure does, D. Thanks!

Mac McGrew says Centenary was Kelsey’s name for Century Expanded not Century.
