This fell out of my press–what is it?

Looking for help identifying the deformed metal star (see pic) that fell out the housing of a No. 1 Vandercook Proofing Press that I am restoring. I removed the housing opposite from the handle and when I laid it on the workbench the metal star fell out. It appears that there is another just like it in the space just above one the two set screws on each side of the housing. Is it a weight for balancing? I can’t seem to get it to stay in place

It looks like some crude handle to tighten/loosen. I’ve seen starfish handles do just that. What does the other side look like?

Thanks for the reply. The other side is identical. It appears to have been cast in a mold. It is about 3/4” thick and 1 1/2” wide at its widest point but I have no idea what its purpose is.
