Where to source a .05” bed sheet

Hello,

I’ve recently acquired a Stephenson Blake S1 proof press but I’ve just discovered after installing it and fixing the gripper pedal that it’s missing the steel bed sheet to bring everything to type high. Right now it’s galley height and I’ve got a fair amount of those but it makes posters and large format printing much more difficult.

I’ve been trying to source a .05” (1.27mm) steel sheet in the UK for the size of the bed (15” x 26”) and I’ve been wholly unsuccessful emailing various shops. The only thing they seem to stock is 1.2mm which is of course no good.

Does anyone know a supplier that could make a 1.27mm sheet in the UK?

The alternative is to get a 1.2mm and a 0.07mm sheet of something else (what?) and stack them (ideally glue them so they don’t bend… but not sure how to do that without adding any height…)

Thoughts?

If I calculate correctly, .07 mm/25.4mm per inch equals .0027 inch or rounded is 3 thousandths of an inch. That is about the thickness of a piece of paper. If you want to be exact, get a micrometer, but that is probably not necessary. Put a piece of paper under the 1.2 mm sheet and it should work.
