Golding Official #6?

Hello,

I’m looking for some help identifying my press and advice on getting it working. I was told it was a Golding Official 8x10 with new rollers when I purchased it, but I don’t believe Golding made that size. I always thought maybe it was a Golding Official #6, but that chase size doesn’t exactly match what I have. I’d like to identify exactly what my press is so I can replace parts as needed and learn more about it.

My questions:
1) Model/serial number - I’ve found some different numbers on the press, but I’m not sure what they mean. On the back of the ink disc, it says “75-0-6”. On the press itself, under the ink disc, it says “R78”. On the left side of the press, it says either “28FF3” or “20FF5” (this number was adhered onto the press, versus being cast directly onto it). The press says “Golding Mfg & Co” on the lower left. I’d like to know if any of these numbers provide more information about the printer?
2) Chase - which measures 8x12, doesn’t look original and has been doctored up. The seller mentioned that the chase may not hold up and will need welded together or get a new chase altogether. The Golding Official #6 has a chase size of 8 1/4” x 12 1/2”, which doesn’t match my current chase 8”x12”), unless I’m missing something.
3) Rust - There’s some minor rust on the press. Should I leave it alone or remove it? If so, what is the best way to remove the rust?
4) If/when replacement parts are needed, where is the best place to find them?

Thanks in advance for any advice or information anyone can share. I’m thankful to find this knowledgeable community!

My Golding Official No 6 also has that number stamped under bottom side of the ink disk, so I think it’s safe to say that’s what you’ve got. I’m not sure about the other numbers.

Most Golding Officials would have a serial number stamped at the top of the print bed, just below the bottom edge of the ink disk. (If you remove the chase, it would be right in the center of the print bed, at the top.)

I’m guessing your chase was made to replace a missing original. In terms of replacement parts, you’ll probably be looking at fabrication for most things - not too many No 6s out there!

Best regards,
Chris
