Restoring C&P 10x15 New Style
I’m currently in the process of restoring a C&P 10x15 New Style (for the first time!!!). At present, the machine is cleaned and oiled, and the roller heights have all been adjusted properly. I’m now at the stage of tackling the platen level and getting it equipped for quick impressions. I have two questions:
1) I’ve seen a couple of numbers floating around for the ‘standard’ platen-to-bed distance. What would folks suggest aiming for? 0.958”? Further out? I’m trying to figure out which height is the best before buying a gauge.
2) Would anyone mind sharing treadle measurements for this C&P 10x15 press? Before spending more on a treadle kit than I did on the press, I’d like to try my hand at fashioning one. I set up with a new motor and belt, but I’d like to have the option to use some elbow (or, knee, I guess) grease here and there.
Thank y’all so much for your help! I’ve relied on this site over the past few weeks for tips on how to transport, clean, oil, the press, &c., &c. Grateful for the continued guidance and support!

If I remember I’ll go down and measure mine. Honestly, the treadle dimensions aren’t super critical. You want as much leverage as possible without causing a tripping hazard for yourself. The hoook length needs to be adjusted to preference.
I’ve seen people create a treadle with board and a steel hook, or even people that have used steel cable instead of the hook.
Looks like it’s approximately 32.5” long, about 8” wide at the foot pedal, and 7.5” wide where it hooks on to the bar at the back of the press.
The hook is about 19.5” long. I somehow have a spare hook for my 10x15 that I’d part with affordably if that would help you with this project.
As for platen leveling and distance, the “proper” method would be to set standard packing, lock up type in the corners and adjust for a good print. If you’re using gauges to set the platen without packing, yes I thing .958” is about correct. That’s what all versions of a platen gauge that I’ve seen are set for.
