endless ink on inkplate

I purchased a kelsey 5x8 and am getting it cleaned up to start printing…I scraped off quite a bit of ink on the ink plate and then wiped it down with some crisco. my problem is after several scrubs my rag is still solid black…! I want to make sure its completely clean before I start but don’t know what to use to get all that ink off?

Hi, gasoline and steel wool worked for me. Be careful with the gas - good ventilation etc.

Standard paint removers will work well also.

There has been a lot of debate here about crisco vs. solvent based cleaning materials. I suppose on some level, its a new vs. old school debate.

You might want to try paint thinner and a 3m green scouring pad (which I prefer to Brillo). The paint thinner goes against many people’s environmental and health sensibilities, but it works, fast and well.

Pop the entire ink plate off for accessibility, if you haven’t already.

You can use the Crisco once you have it up and running. Right now just cut to the quick and use a solvent!
