Type height and Adanas

I am planning to purchase an Adana 8x5, but is it possible to adjust the type height on the press to 23,56 mm?

Type high .918” is 23,32mm.23,56mm is .9275”.The difference is only 10 thou”.I’m don’t know why you need the adjustment so here are some options. You could allow for this on your packing(tympan). If your rollers need to be recovered the specs could be altered. If using .918 type and you want to bring it up put 10 thou of mylar behind the type.Of note and more expensive many heidelberg cylinder presses have the beds ground down about 20 thou so that .937 cutting rule can be used which has been diecutting industry standard in North America for over 100years.I ‘m rambling never seen an Adana in person.
Hope I’m helping Mike

I concur. But a quick look at the bed on my 85 indicates that it can be backed off a good quarter of an inch, perhaps for the larger numbering machines that have been the topic of another recent thread. If you did have an advantage in altering the rollers or trucks, the ink disk can be brought forward with a thin washer to compensate.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

The reason for my question is that the type height in Denmark is 23,56 mm, and the main parts of the Adanas are working with a height of 0,918 inch. I know that the difference only is approx. 0,2 mm, but my experience say that it is enough to make a bad inking of the types. On my old German table top platen there are some screws in the side of the “rails” (I do not know the English term), where the trucks run on. With these screws I can adjust the distance between the bed and the rollers. This construction does, that the press can be used for any type height, and that it is possible to make a correction of the “force” the rollers hit the types during the inking of the form.
The Adana is a relative cheap press, and perfect as an extra press for printing small items etc., but I will only purchase one if it is possible for me to make quality prints on it with types of 23,56 mm. I will not buy one, if it is not possible to adjust the type height without chancing the diameters of the rollers etc.

I am looking forward to reading your replies!

Jens, I got an e-mail from a colleague in Oslo who uses the same setup. (Adana with Danish type) According to him, this adjustment is not a problem at all. To make it work right, you may have to put one layer of tape on the rails and adjust the thickness of your packing by one sheet. That is all you need to do. The trucks and rollers will be fine as they are and should not be altered.

The only problem you may have is if you try to use .918 high type in the same form with your Danish type. This will cause uneven inking and impression. Other than that, there is no problem.

winking cat press - Thank you very much!

Hi,
Yes the Adana 8 x 5 has a great deal of leeway and adjusting the bed to accomodate type high measurenents for the continent is very easy.
I have used type from 0.5 inch to 1.25 inch on my press without difficulty.
However, unless you are a very competent press operator it is best to adjust the press and then LEAVE THE ADJUSTMENT ALONE.
Fine adjustment in your make ready is accomplished by packing on the platen.
I have any entry under Cockleshell Press which is in southern UK so if you have specific problems give me a call. I have been using Adanas since 1960 so claim to know something about them.
