help identifying these dated small brass cylinders

Are these from a press? they are individually dated from 1917-1926 . They are brass about 1.5 inch by 1.5 inch. the numbers are raised. Are they common or rare?
thanks

They do not appear to be printing numbers of any type since the characters are not reversed. My guess is that they are marking bands of some sort.

I think that they are pigeon bands. Unlike the removable split bands that we use for our chickens, pigeons are permanently banded for racing.

See:http://www.speedpigeon.com/banding_racing_pigeon.htm

If these are, as Dee says, “brass about 1.5 inch by 1.5 inch,” wouldn’t that make them a bit large and heavy for pigeon bands? Perhaps for a larger bird, or marking/tagging something else?

Maybe they are for racing turkeys.

oops….sure would!

Or maybe pigeons were just that much bigger and stronger back when these bands were made? There’s that old saying about “they just don’t make ‘em like they used to” …
