Self storage for workspace?

I’m looking at moving my equipment (10x15 C&P OS, C&P cutter and supplies) out of my garage and into a dedicated work area.

Because I do letterpress printing for a side business ( just a few jobs a month) I can’t afford a large space.

I was thinking about setting up a small workspace in a 10x12 self storage garage. I was curious if anybody else had tried this?

Any other suggestion on small, inexpensive work areas would also be appreciated!

You would want to check the contract with the storage unit company. They may restrict the type of use, which may preclude use for an active business facility. Some may also restrict access to the units to a certain number of times per month.

Of course, many of the units have no power outlets or capability of being heated either.

In our area generally you are restricted access to certain hours as well. As this is a side gig, these restrictions may prohibit your being able to complete jobs in the evening, etc. Also, I believe that most of the contracts restrict the ability to use and store solvents and other materials that you are most likely using to clean your press. This is particularly true in spaces that have the sort of environmental controls that would make the idea feasible (e.g. HVAC).

Instead of using a storage unit, I would ask around in your neighborhood for space, especially if you are in an older neighborhood and not a pristine new development. Also, you could put an ad in a newspaper or shopper.

If you wanted to, you could mention that you would teach letterpress and/or do printing work in exchange for the space. You could stipulate that the person could not use the equipment if you were not there. If that worked out, you could probably do some of your own work concurrently with the time you spent teaching.

Where are you located? Maybe someone on Briarpress might even be interested.

Thanks a lot for the information and tips!

I did put a want ad on Craigslist in my area. Perhaps I’ll see some responses to that.
