Any letterpress for beginners courses/worshops in Toronto area?

I’d really love to learn about the art of letterpress - anyone know of any workshops or classes available in the Toronto, Ontario area in July-August? I’d be willing to travel 1-2 hours - so London, Kingston and surrounding areas are also fine.

I’d really appreciate if any of you have any information to share. Thank you in advance.

I’m two towns away from Kingston, i give private lessons if you want to stop by. That is Kingston, Massachusetts. Dick G.

Oh, I should have mentioned - Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Sorry! :)

And of course by London, I mean London, Ontario as well.

Thank you for your reply though dickg!

Try Don Black in toronto. Trip Print Press does tours, I think (worth checking out) but no workshops.

You did mention Canada, i’m just kidding, but from what i’ve heard i second the Don Black visit, he has more stuff than most museums. Dick G.

If you wanted to volunteer in the print shop at Westfield Heritage Village near Cambridge, I could get you started on the basics. We practice letterpress circa 1875, but if you want to set type by hand, the procedures haven’t changed much. Westfield is open on Sundays from 12:30 to 4 pm, and also on some holidays. The website is www.westfieldheritage.ca

If you are interested, email me and we can set up a time when I will be sure to be there. At least you might want to come for one visit to see what it is all about. We have two working presses, a Washington hand press and a floor model platen press.

Hi there,

Tanya at snap + tumble does workshops on a regular basis using her tabletop (Pilot and Showcard, I think) presses. She only has her June workshop dates posted, but you can likely email her to see what she has planned for July/August:

Akemi at KOZO Studio also does workshops. No July/August dates posted yet, but I’d email to check.

Both individuals have a great reputation for introducing others to letterpress and both are in Toronto.

You can also keep an eye out on the CBBAG site:

http://www.cbbag.ca/workshp.html

Although there doesn’t appear to be any letterpress-specific workshops listed right now.

Finally, do a quick search on this site and you’ll find a few other Ontario-based letterpress workshop recommendations above and beyond those I’ve listed. e.g. http://www.briarpress.org/4658

Good luck!

I just remembered French Press (Buffalo, NY) workshops:

Creamandbutter - I just contacted Arounna from “Bookhou” and she said if I could get another person interested in taking a workshop with me, we could pick our own date. The store is located at 798 dundas street west (just west of dundas and bathurst).
So you can easily TTC there!

It costs $140/+ taxes per person for 3 hours. All materials included.

Please email to let me know if you want to take the class!

I’m just setting up my shop after a move. Was wondering if anyone was interested in doing workshops. Just slightly more then an hour outside of Toronto. Would be either a small group or private. If anyone is interested, let me know.
