Challenge 1528 KP — need rollers

Greetings all,

Sadly, the form rollers on my press were thrown out by an uninformed janitor in my studio, and i’ve had a difficult time finding replacements. It seems like i’ll need new ones fabricated, but i don’t know where to start. any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

Everett

What did you do with the body?

sorry, i’m not sure what you mean by body. do you mean the core of the rollers?

I think he means the body of the janitor!!!!!

Ooh, it’s the facebook-press!

Sorry about your rollers, how anyone could throw them out is beyond me.

They look pretty simple. Did they just ride in those channels?

If original cores are unavailable, it seems to me that you could get steel bar stock and use shaft collars with set screws to hold them in.

A roller company can machine new cores to your specifications. I had excellent results recovering rollers with SI Industries - www.siindustries.com. Good pricing, too.

Send them careful measurements and they will be able to help you out.

they do just ride in the channels, but the right side of the rollers have a cog on them. it’s a non motorized press, so there’s a crank opposite the operators side to mix ink, and the rollers turn as the bed moves.

as for that body…i haven’t seen anyone else in the room since i freaked out that they threw my rollers out! yes, it is the facebook press in our analog research laboratory

I recognized it from your talk at the Brand New Conference, it’s a very nice, clean studio you guys have down there.

Maybe contact Challenge and see if they can help, either with the part or with measurements. They have been very nice to me in the past.

If not, you might be able to find a match to that gear on one of the many industrial supply and surplus companies you find online. That type of gear is called a Rack and Pinion. The flat part is the rack - the gear is the pinion. I have seem them referenced as “spur gears”.

You’ll have to figure out the correct measurements to get it to mesh with that gear.

Here’s an example: http://www.qtcgears.com/RFQ/default.asp?Page=../KHK/newgears/KHK020.html
