C&P oil holes

Recently I bought a 1913, C&P 15x10. After a good cleaning, I was getting ready to identify all the oil holes, clean them and drop oil into them. In some of the bigger holes though I took out what seems to be a wad of strings. Is this supposed to be there or is it cleaning negligence? Do I replace it or leave the hole wide open?

As an aside, as a beginner on this letterpress journey, I must say that I have found an incredible community among letterpress printers. Thanks in advance for your help.

The string is just there to retain oil, and maybe keep out foreign matter too. I’ve seen cotton wadding used the same way.

A piece of felt works as a better replacement than string, but the are also fine left open.

don’t leave them open. buy a bag of cotton balls. they keep the junk out and slow down the rate of oil flow.

The Chandler & Price Oiling Chart makes no mention of grease…only oil. As I learned in my long-ago apprentice days, the crankshaft gear and the large gear and the cams inside are oiled only.

where in here is there any mention of grease???

Felt sounds like an excellent idea. Thanks so much for the help! Greatly appreciated.

Do any of the oil holes have the screw in cap things? Mine has only one and was wondering if all holes with a thread should have them? Also - Wow that’s a clean C&P!, going through the process of cleaning gunk off mine. I dont want to pull it apart. What did you use?
