Rehabing C&P 10 x 15

I am very fortunate to have just moved a C&P 10 x 15 that was in the garage of a printing teacher from the local high school for some 30 years. It’s got some rust and some junk, but I hope I can get some help on the following questions, not in any order of importance… I am sure sure there will be more as the days and weeks go on. Thanks.

1. The pres has several capped and uncapped lubrication holes. The oil (3 in 1 to start and machine to follow) sort of sits on the cup and takes quite a while to flow in. I routed out the holes to get rid of any crud. Is this normal?

2. I have found about 10 such holes but I understand there are more than 30. Time to go hunting with the flashlight or is there actually some documentation?

3. I need the following for the press…
*one gripper
*one set of lower roller hooks
any suggestions as to where I might get them?

4. My understanding is that the rollers are held in the hooks by a pin that goes through the end of the hooks? Can I use any stiff wir for this or is there actually a part made for this that I will need?

5. The flywheel has a very light coat of rust on it which comes off with some fine steel wool and a bit of WD-40. Was that ever painted or just bare metal (I assume)?

Thanks for any and all help and thanks to all on the list who created entires about moving such a press. One u-Haul, three good friends, a few tools and 3 hours later. Just great. Neil

On mine, some of the oil holes were so completely filled with and covered over with crud that you couldn’t even see that there was an oil hole there. Be glad it’s just a press - many of the oil holes on my Thompson Type-Casters were plugged solid with once-liquid typemetal!

Briar Press has an oil chart, in their press manuals section at:

Also, Justin Miller of Bound Staff Press has some interesting C&P docs online:
