n. Printed text, images, figures, etc. used to check for errors and other issues prior to production printing.
galley or slip proof: taken prior to page layout to check for problems with individual letters and spacing problems.
page proof: prints of formatted pages, used to check for formatting issues such as consistency, awkwardly broken paragraphs, etc.

v. proof: to check a manuscript for accuracy and errors
