Type case with equal sized sections

I have come across some type cases that are the same size as a California case but equal sized sections (about 2 x inches or a bit larger). Can anyone please tell me something about them? Thanks - Neil

Sounds like cap cases — boxes about 1-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches in rows of 7 or 8 across on each side of the center divider? They were either used in conjunction with “lower cases” that only held the minuscules, or were used for cap fonts like titling or many ornamental fonts that don’t have lower case letters. There are double cap cases with one center divider and triple cap cases with the two dividers similar to a California case.

Sounds like a double or triple cap case.
They would be used for faces that are caps only.

This is a double caps case, also common is the triple caps case. It would naturally have 3 uniform sections.
