Bent Platen Bolt?

Currently calibrating a C&P 8x12 NS, and it looks like the top right platen screw is bent, or at least it inserts at an angle on the locknut side. From what I can tell, it actually screws into the platen fine (from the adjustment screw to the threading into the platen). I think this has been the case for some time, as a corner of the lock nut has worn against the cover of the axle running below the feedboard. I’ll try to upload pics this weekend.

I think the previous owner (who bought the press and tried to die cut on it) loosened the locknut bolt way out and then ran the press. Any idea of possible repercussions? Will this create problems down the road? It definitely looks replaceable, but pushing the platen out far enough to get the tip of the bolt free might be a bear of a job.

As long as you can get the platen set where you need it, and the locknut can be tightened to hold the position, you should not have any particular difficulties with the press. When you set the platen, allow for printing the heaviest stock you think you might encounter, and you will never have to adjust the platen again. If you properly pack the sheets under the tympan, you can adjust for various weights of paper that way. For the most part, the platen bolts should not need adjustment beyond basic leveling. Of course, there are reasons….but you may not encounter the occasions to do so.
