Which letterpress to buy?

I’m considering buying my first letterpress, but am unsure which kind and size to look for. I will likely be printing business cards, letterhead, invitations. The press will probably be located in a small room on the second floor of my house.

Any advice to help me head in the right general direction? Thanks in advance!

If you are thinking of the sort of printing now popular, sometimes called deep impression, look for a strong press, and expect that it will have to be a tabletop press like a C&P Pilot or similar style, although I would recommend a Sigwalt or Golding Official as a stronger and more convenient press. There was a Sigwalt under discussion here last week that I believe was rejected by the person who was considering it, but it appeared to me to be an ideal first press for the sort of printing you seem to be considering. Perhaps it’s still available.

Some Australians are a little blunt, much more so than Americans. During WW2 we were astonished at the difference, and it changed Australian society for the better.

However, if you are printing as a hobby, go ahead and enjoy! if not, do a small-business-management course first. We have seen many businesses in Oz fail because of lack of business understanding. On the other hand, perhaps Americans have more business sense than Aussies?
