New to letterpress

I’m a graphic designer and am very interested in the craft and the intimacy letterpress can bring to design. I would like to know if anyone knew of any apprenticeships available in the Baltimore MD area and as a beginner what kind of press is best to learn on.

Thanks for the help.

You might check out Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring, MD. They offer classes and it may be possible to volunteer there. They have a web site.

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

Updated. You might also check Maryland Insitute. The Dolphin Press (MICA’s press) has a number of Vandercooks, lead type, etc. I am unsure about course offerings but it is defintely worth a shot. You might also check in with Gilah Press.

We have several letterpress classes coming up at Pyramid Atlantic. We have Business Cards on Handmade Paper on April 5, 12, & 19 which will use letterpress. And then we have Press-To Letterpress on June 25-27 with instructors from Yee-Haw Industrial Letterpress.

We are also trying to start a regular series of letterpress happy hours in the summer so that people like you can get experience in letterpress informally. I will post details here when I have them.

Yes, me too!
Although, I am in southern Minnesota. Would anyone happen to know of any classes (or anything pertaining to letterpress!) offered in this area?
Good luck Josh!
