Ink Ghosting

Hi everyone! I’m printing on a C&P 10x15. I’m new to this and learning everyday. Today’s challenge is ink coverage (it looks thin and uneven) and ghosting. See image. Rollers and trucks are new. Paper is Lettra. Thanks in advance for help!

Can you post a photo of the plate locked up in the press? Could be that your rollers/trucks are slipping on the rails.

Brad.

It could also be that the rollers are hitting the type too hard. Did you set the rollers with a roller height gauge? I agree with Brad that it would help to see a picture of the plate locked up in the press, mainly to see which way it is locked up (i.e. with the word Roy horizontal or vertical?)

Hello gracefuldesigns, There are alot of posts about this problem. I believe the ghosting problem is caused by rollers under certain conditions where the lighter ink colors and the image size conspire against us. The roller lays ink on the image as it passes down and on the return journey up, it touches the image in a different location leaving a lighter/darker layer of ink on the edge of each letter and ghosts where the image is larger then the roller’s circumference.
The best solution is a rider roller that re-speads the ink between the two passes. However if you do not already own a rider roller you may have difficulty obtaining one unless your get lucky or unless you are creative enough to make your own.
Other solutions involving adjusting any and all aspects of your press, rollers, ink consistency and make ready may or may not be helpful but I had this problem constantly until I go a set of rider rollers and I no longer have the problem at all and I can show you the before and after pictures and that’s the only difference in my setup so to me it is a clear cut issue.

A rider roller would definitely help because the rollers can carry more ink.
In Offset Printing the ghosting is also referred to as ink staving. Meaning, there is not enough ink on the roller to pass the image evenly.

I’m so grateful for all the help! This is a great community! I went out to take photos, set everything up, and printed a bit. It didn’t ghost this time, so I’m thinking (*hoping*) that it was roller/truck slipping. I was very careful while setting up. The rider roller is definitely something to consider. I’ll have to put my engineer hubby on the case. Thanks again, all!
