Sigwalt Ideal chases

17 years ago I posted that I was looking for a chase for my Sigwalt Ideal #3… I’m still looking. Has anyone located any chases for this press OR a different size Ideal?

I’ve scoured the internet for measurements/specifications for these chases which are unique. I’ve got a Golding chase that renders the press “usable” to a degree, but the angled protrusions on the Golding chase don’t hold fast with the round “pins” in the rails of the Sigwalt press bed, so the chase shifts when printing. Not “Ideal” haha.

Are there any Sigwalt press owners left on Briar Press that can shed light on where these chases are and/or what their specifications are if I were to choose to have one machined for me?

Thanks for any responses…

I’d check with the Stark Brothers, if this is something they can make. I know they’ve made some Kelsey chases, and chase bases. Should be doable, but they may need a good chase as a template. Stark Press Company.

Another possibility is to find a chase, or have one made, that fits the bed and is just a few thousandths of an inch from the pins on the sides. Then you can have the small triangles welded on which wedge behind the pins to hold the chase in the bed. On my Sigwalt Nonpareil (Ideal chases also fit it) the wedges are 1/8” thick, a bit less than 5/16 “tall” at the peak, 15/16” long, and 3/16” “high” at the ends, sort of “pitched-roof” shape in profile, and they are centered on both of the short sides of the chase flush with the back of the chase. I do not know the numbered model of my 6x9 but I suspect the wedges are the same on somewhat smaller models such as 5x8 and maybe 4x6.

I had a similar need for chases when I pickup up an Ideal No. 5. Luckily I was sent measurements (thank you Kyle!), was able to model it in Fusion, made a 3D printed prototype to make sure it fit, then sent away to have it machined in aluminum. As long as you have measurements, and model the tabs correctly, it shouldn’t be too difficult to have a chase made.
