How to Prevent Rust After Cleaning but Before Paint?
Hello. I have a little Kelsey I’m cleaning up. I’ve soaked it in 50/50 lemon juice vinegar. Worked great. Read all of the rust removal posts but none mention the interim step pre-paint. A lot of paint is gone so it’s rusting instantly.
After I’ve soaked & rust is gone, what next? I can’t primer while wet, but it starts to rust if I wait for it to dry before priming.
And what is best to apply on ink disk to prevent rust?
Any brands primer/paint you recommend? Was gonna get oil-based primer & paint.
Thank you!
Add to your solution some sodium nitrate. Be careful though as it is poisonous if ingested or absorbed through open cuts. The amount will depend upon the amount of your vinegar/lemon solution; experiment for best results. :o)
At the end of the day, you need to neutralize the acid in a base.
A solution of baking soda is probably the simplest, but also not terribly effective. A dilute lye solution would be a good choice to get it done fast.
I got a tip recently to use Renaissance Wax Polish. I like it so far. I’ve used it on old galley trays, composing sticks, and press parts after soaking them in evaporust and drying them with a microfiber towel.
