Does anyone know how all these old newspapers and books made engravings before photo engraving was used.

End grain hardwood engravings were common, cut by hand by artists on the newspaper staffs or on contract by other artists. After the electrotype process was commercialized many such wood engravings were electrotyped to preserve the originals.
