typecase
Some (many) years ago, Larry Raid produced lightweight plastic shells of 3/4, California layout, typecases. They came in a red or white color. Larry is no longer with us, but I would like to know if anyone else has continued this very useful item and, if so, where might they be located.
Without knowing exactly how Larry made those, at a guess, if you have an old but serviceable case, and you drill holes in the bottoms of all the compartments, place the case over a shallow box so it can be sealed against the box, make a hole in the box for a shopvac hose fitting, get a supply of vacuum-formable thin plastic sheets larger than the type case and a bank of heat lamps suspended over the apparatus, laying a sheet on top of the case, turning on the heat lamps and the vacuum, and as the plastic sheet warms up it would be drawn by suction into the compartments, forming a plastic copy of the case. Turn off the heat lamps, and the vacuum after the sheet has cooled, and “rinse and repeat”.
Thank you for the reply and suggested methodology. Having once made mouthguards for hockey players, I am familiar with vacuum box forming. What I am seeking is already formed cases as, in my circumstance, I have neither the space nor equipment to produce such. Presently, I am employing seed flats which, although usable, are too flimsy to withstand even casual use. When I think of the 3/4 cases now adorning walls and simply holding trinkets……. . :o)
