I know most readers here already know how to set type BUT:
For the past 4 years I have been on the board of Fondation Louis Jou in Les Baux de Provence where I return each fall to work and teach. Louis Jou is famous in France for his title “The Architect of the Book” having produced nearly 100 books on his Stanhope presses, illustrating with his wood engravings and printing from his bespoke type. The type is where things get really interesting - Jou designed his own type family in 7 sizes, cut by Charles Malin and cast in Spain in the early 1920-30s. Very unique type with multiple character widths and logotypes designed to give even color to the page.
In this short weekend workshop we will be cutting linocuts and composing with Jou’s type and printing on three Stanhope presses in his former studio in the walled castle village of Les Baux. The typesetting is the icing on the cake but the setting and accommodations are on another level.
Extend your trip! I have Rebecca Gilbert coming to teach wood engraving the preceding weekend.
