How do you adjust the height of a Challenge Proof Press?

I have rather unclear directions that say to loosen two screws that are perpendicular to the floor and adjust some other screw, and I couldn’t find better ones online.

If the answer’s easily-to-explain, please explain it. I’ll take a picture of it so you can circle the the parts as it may be hard to explain them with words alone.

If it isn’t, tell me which book it’s in. I’m likely to have it (http://library.cornell.edu).

Are you trying to level the press on the floor? I can’t tell what you are asking.

Sorry, I mean the distance between the type and the cylinder.

Sounds like what I do to adjust the roller height of a Vandercook No. 4. Is this it? Is there a roller height gauge involved?

Which model do you have? Post a photo if you can.

Hi, Many Challenge proof presses were set to type high plus the thickness of the composing sticks and galleys, plus the cylinder packing. We put a bed plate of sheet metal the same thickness as a galley on the bed when we wanted to pull a proof of a locked-up chase ready for the printing press. You could lay a galley or stick with the tied-up type directly on the bed also. We made the final proof press impression adjustment on the cylinder under the oiled tympan. The tympan was changed only when it got too dirty.

I have a Challenge 15MP, however lots of great advise has been given here. My press is type high and doesn’t need a bed-plate. It should take the .040 thickness of packing I’m sure.
