Gripper Bar Spring hitting my roller

Just started printing on my 5x8 Kelsey - my Gripper Bar Spring seems out of place and my bottom roller is in fact hitting it when it comes down.

Any tips as to how to move it back to where it belongs or fix it? I’ve attached images.

Thanks in advance!

I should also add that my grippers themselves are not moving easily and end up with ink on them.

If I’m not mistaken the end of the spring shown in the bottom photo 0492 is supposed to stick out a small hole in the base casting below the handle. It looks like the spring is broken off short and so will no longer reach the hole. That means it is moving with the platen and not providing pressure for the grippers.

The end of the spring in photo 0488 shoiuld perhaps be under the shaft and not over it as shown. Or maybe the spring is simply installed backwards and the other leg of the spring is long enough to go through the hole. I’m not positive about the exact configuration but those are the things I’d check. It’s not unusual for these springs to be broken or for the assembly to be incorrectly put together. It should be an easy fix. If you need a new spring you can get one from Alan Runfeldt at the Excelsior Press:
